Trans* March 2012!

It was the second annual Trans* March at Love Park, and we had an amazing time supporting our fellow trans* brothers, sisters, siblings, and friends. A year ago, we helped make  a presence in the city. We were out and proud in our support of trans* people as an organisation because we have a strong commitment to raising awareness about issues within our community. Thanks to everyone who participated with us on behalf of hotpot!.

This year, the rally came together to commemorate Kyra, whose death occurred one month ago. We cannot let these senseless deaths within the trans* community continue. We must educate, support, and fight for our friends. As a trans* person, it pains me to see lives end because of the hate and fear thrown at us. The Trans* March is a small step toward equality, and we need more people to walk alongside us.

Invitation! October 25, planning meeting

Hello hotpot!, friends, and community partners,

I cordially invite you to hotpot!’s Queer Immigrant Rights Panel Discussion (second iteration this year) and Newcomers’ Resource Guide to Philadelphia Planning Meeting. My vision is that we come together at the William Way Center to think through the creative and logistical details for this Panel Discussion that we will host this winter and the Resource Guide we will publish by Spring 2013.

Since this event is a visioning meeting, I’d like to invite people who were involved in the planning meetings for the Queer Immigrant Rights Community Forum we hosted in May as well as new allies who want to join us. Any friend who wants to help in this visioning process is welcome to come.

Please take a look at the program book from our May 2012 Queer Immigrant Rights discussion. Also, here is a Torontonian publication–I was in Toronto a few times in the summer of 2011and was amazed to find multiple non-profit publications aimed for queer newcomers (I also learned to use the term newcomer around this time) that might spark interest and debate. All suggestions welcome.

When: October 25th, 6-8pm

Where: William Way Center, 1315 Spruce St. Philadelphia, PA 19107

Why: If you want to join visioning conversations about a Queer Immigrant Rights Panel and Queer Newcomers’ Resource Guide to Philadelphia

Who: Anyone who is affiliated with hotpot! as a member, ally, future friend and those involved with Immigrants Rights work in Philadelphia and wants to be a part of the planning for the panel and resource guide.

Please RSVP by October 22nd

If you can’t come, there are still many ways you can be involved! Be in touch~

Karaoke Becomes a hotpot! Tradition

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

On September 22, twenty hotpot! members and loved ones came together for singing and dinner at New Harmony restaurant in Chinatown. Some friends loved playing the 80’s tunes, and others wanted to play the current top 40 songs, and still others enjoyed John Lennon and kids’ songs. Two members admitted that though they were late-bloomers to karaoke, they were moved to participate and sing out loud, giving caution (and possible embarrassed pink cheeks) to the wind! This being our 2nd annual, karaoke is becoming a tradition within hotpot! and we hope to have another run soon. (We’ve already started brainstorming ways to make it even more awesome.) Thanks to all who joined, and hope to see you and more of you next time. To those newcomers who allowed karaoke to be their first hotpot! event, you’re awesome and eager to see you at the next event.

NQAPIA conference reflections

hey,

a little late but  I did get a few photos to share at the NQAPIA conference this past July. i didn’t get to hang with other hotpot! folks as much as i wanted because i was mainly wearing my NQAPIA hat, but i did catch up with folks in the halls and of course over food.

that said, i was moved by attending my second NQAPIA conference. 3 year ago in Seattle i met an amazing crew of people, many of whom are now close friends and fellow board members. this year what stood out to me was that we had over 350 QAPI people and allies attend events at the White House, at the Artisphere, and all through our conference with such energy, poise, and power!

you can find out more about what’s new with the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance at http://www.NQAPIA.org

cheers,

al

Join us October 6, 2012, for Philadelphia’s 2nd Philly Trans* March. The Philly Trans* March is not only a rally and demonstration, but rather a revolutionary movement. Open to people of all gender identities, expressions, and experiences, The Philly Trans* March welcomes everyone to join in this MARCH TOWARDS EQUALITY and protest against the hate, social injustice, and inequality faced by the trans*, gender variant, gender queer and gender non-conforming community.

Issues such as hate violence and the lack of official concern, healthcare policies, trans* media misrepresentation, financial and housing insecurity, police brutality, workplace policies and employment discrimination, and the lack of resources for t/gv/gq/gnc youth are just a few of the concerns being voiced upon in this year’s March.

PTM is also a CELEBRATION of the triumphs we have experienced in our city and the unique resources Philadelphia offers to our community. With an aim to increase Trans*, GV, GQ and GNC visibility and to gain equality, the Philly Trans* March is an affirmation of our beauty, strength, and diversity.Organized by members of Philly’s trans*, gender variant, gender queer and gender non-conforming community and allies, this endeavor is committed to creating a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone.
