On May 17th, hotpot! is sponsoring a listening forum in Philadelphia to highlight the often unheard stories of LGBTQ immigrants.
Will you join us?
Here are the details:
Thursday, May 17th, 2012 from 6:30-9pm
The Rotunda 4014 Walnut St., West Philadelphia
Speakers include LGBTQ Immigrants and service providers. We’ll have partners from local immigration and LGBTQ organizations tabling and we’ll provide light snacks before the forum.
We want to make people aware that in our city, there is a need to support LGBTQ Immigrants who face xenophobia, racism, homophobia and transphobia. Many LGBTQ immigrants face unique challenges and injustice. These include navigating the application for asylum based on sexual orientation, demanding the rights of transgender individuals in immigration detention, and mourning the isolation from mainstream non-immigrant LGBTQ communities. LGBTQ immigrants are often isolated and not seen.
We believe that building awareness and creating change through visibility and education are the first step in mitigating the injustices faced by LGBTQ immigrants as well as improving our interconnected lives. We hope that the Listening Forum will be the first step in addressing the challenges faced by LGBTQ immigrants.
Join us on May 17th from 6:30-9pm! In consideration of issues of safety and access, no ID is needed to get into the event. The Rotunda is wheelchair accessible and close to public transportation (40th St stop on Market Frankford Blue Line, bus 21). Bike and street parking is available. Please be in touch if you or a friend needs an interpreter; we have contacts who can interpret in ASL, Spanish, Mandarin, French and Indonesian.
Please RSVP and help us spread the word!!!
